2016 Kitchen Trends
2016 looks to be the Year of the “Super Kitchen!” A recently released trend report by Houzz, an online resource for remodeling and design, indicates that kitchen remodels are now incorporating functions and decor traditionally associated with other rooms. The U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study includes responses from over 2,400 U.S. homeowners using Houzz who are in the midst of, are planning or recently completed a kitchen renovation project. The report highlights some design and remodel trends that consumers are favoring for their kitchen remodel as well as what they are looking for in terms of cabinetry and fixtures.
Larger kitchens with a change in layout make up more than half of kitchen renovation pro-jects, as homeowners look to make their kitchens more “open” to adjoining interior spaces. Be-cause entertaining, socializing and workspace are a regular part of a modern family’s kitchen requirements, open floor plans are the most desired over a gallery layout. Changing the style of the kitchen is the most desirable kitchen renovation project for 2016, with over 76 percent of homeowners expecting kitchen renovations to go far beyond improving flow, storage or aesthet-ics. The top 3 styles cited are transitional (21 percent), contemporary (19 percent) and modern (12 percent).
Custom cabinetry also tops the list of kitchen renovation trends of 2016, with the majority of homeowners opting for a number of custom or semi-custom cabinet options that complements the style of the kitchen while allowing for ample and creative storage space. Storage options in custom cabinetry have expanded to meet the needs those who desire a clutter-free kitchen, showcasing cabinets and drawers that conceal custom features. Pantry storage, islands, and peninsulas add to the growing demand for storage that today’s families require.
Durable countertops are also a highly sought-after product, with many homeowners opting to combine materials in kitchens where there are multiple countertop spaces. Natural stone tops the list of countertop materials, with 93 percent of homeowners appreciating the beauty of mate-rials such as granite and quartz. Muted, natural colors are the preferred choice, which allows for a seamless color integration as well as blending with the cabinetry.
Also on the rise is the number of homeowners seeking qualified kitchen remodeling special-ists to assist with their kitchen remodel. The days of the “DIY” kitchen fix are fading fast, with 87 percent of homeowners enlisting the help of professionals, up from 80 percent in the previous year. The most common reason cited for undergoing a kitchen remodel – 43 percent of home-owners questioned said they could no longer stand their old kitchen!
