Granite Countertops
Granite is a popular surface for many countertops, whether in the kitchen or bathroom, as it is known for having a very resilient surface that can withstand the daily wear and tear of today’s busy families. However, like any countertop surface, granite requires some simple maintenance tips to keep it looking fresh and protect your investment for years to come.
Not only are granite countertops extremely beautiful; they are one of the best countertop products on the market due to being extremely scratch and chip resistant. There are some simple tips that you can use in your daily life to get the most out of your granite countertops, in order to allow them to maintain their natural beauty:
Do not use abrasives cleansers that contain ammonia, bleach or acid. Harsh all-purpose cleaners can also damage the finish of the stone’s surface over time. Other things to avoid are abrasive sponge pads, wire brushes or steel wool. The recommended method for cleaning granite countertops to help them retain their finish is the use of mild soap and warm water, using a soft cloth on the surface. There are many products designed specifically for cleaning granite countertops that not only cleans the surface, but helps to protect the finish. When selecting a cleaner, be sure to read the directions and use as recommended.
Immediately blot up any spills, as the longer they are allowed to sit, the bigger the chance it will stain. This is particularly true with acidic substances such as wine, tomato sauce, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, coffee and soft drinks. While these will not etch the granite, there is still a chance staining will occur if neglected.
Use a cutting board. Just because granite is scratch-resistant does not mean it can be used in place of a cutting board. Cutting on granite can eventually dull the stone as well as damage the edges of your knives.
